•    Learn when to say no. Some opt-outs could be bad for you. A common scenario is to exclude material cost and hauling fees from the contract and pay only service fees. In the long run, it will be more expensive to purchase asphalt shingles on your own, transport them, unload them, and worry about disposal. You could void the warranty unknowingly.

•    Know that you have the right to choose. Capitalize on this. Some varieties of shingles don’t cost as much as others. Scheduling a roof repair that allows the crew to finish the job at their convenience within 30 days is bound to be cheaper than booking a rush job. Request all your possible options from the contractor first.

•    Demand for proof. Some businesses are only good in making claims but lack the necessary insurance and workmen’s compensation insurances. Be sure that you are truly “fully covered.” Present specific, anticipated scenarios during the consultation. Have the company discuss with you who’s responsible in case such event does happen.

•    Be clear about payments. Although you don’t have to pay anything until after the job is finished, bigger jobs usually require down payments. Ask if staggered payment plans are available, say no to cash, and ask for official receipts. More importantly, be firm that you will only make the final payment upon meeting desired outcomes.

Tip: The standard packages that Kansas City roofing contractors offer is not your only option. Don’t be shy to ask for alternatives. Remember that changing some materials and adjusting deadlines can give you some leeway with the price.
